Catherine Deneuve stars as a wealthy but bored newlywed, desperate to taste life towards the fullest. She apparently with their gets the woman's wish early in the film when she actually is kidnapped, linked with a sapling, and whipped. It turns out that this can be only a daydream, but the woman's subsequent visits to some neighboring brothel, whereby she presents her solutions, certainly appear to be real. This illusion/reality dichotomy gets to the last scenes, during which we are offered two probable endings. On account of a query of copyright and title, Belle de Jour disappeared from view after that its 1967 discharge, not even resurfacing with videotape. When it had been reissued theatrically inside 1994, many critics inserted the perplexing but enchanting film on their lists of the year's ideal films. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi.
